Dear Friends & Colleagues,

With the Indian summer scorching most parts of the country, we tend to overlook 2500 km of the majestic Himalayan ranges stretching west to east across the northern face. Here is a great opportunity to explore cooler & colder regions abounding in their own cultures, history and natural beauty. As the snow melts, high mountain passes become gateways to some of the most spectacular regions of the world.

The Garwhal Himalayas lie just 150 miles north east of Delhi and there lies at the Gangotri glacier, the birthplace of the mighty Ganges River of unparalleled importance in the history and culture of India. Towering snow-covered mountains of this region encircle the lush Gangotri valley and its surrounding glaciers. Garhwal contains more than 100 summits over 20,000 feet, the highest being Nanda Devi and Kamet, both exceeding 25,000 feet. The entire region holds special spiritual significance throughout India. According to Hindu legend, the mountains are the birthplace not only of the Ganges, but of the many Hindu deities. Religious pilgrims follow long trails winding up the valleys to the sacred Gangotri Glacier. Charming villages nestle in the southern valleys, surrounded by forested hillsides, lush terraced fields, and giant snow-covered peaks. The Char (Four) Dham (spots) - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri are the primary spiritual centers, stay in luxurious tents pitched by the Leisure hotels or take a flying visit with the recently introduced helicopter service to all the four shrines and the Sikh temple at Hemkund. Other than following the pilgrims trail, there are great trekking and climbing opportunities, with a visit to the Valley of Flowers for the nature and adventure enthusiast. It is but of little wonder that the journey to the source of Ganges or `Gangotri’ is listed on the Lonely Planet’s list of "10 places must visit before you die"

Come get inspired to ascent the Himalayas only with Le Passage to India!

Warmest regards
